It was the night before Christmas.

The children hoped [that Saint Nicholas would come and fill them].
［聖ニコラスがやって来て、それら［＝長靴下］を（クリスマスのプレゼントで）いっぱいにしてくれること］を子どもたちは願っていた。

The children were in their beds.

They stopped talking, but I could hear them moving.

They made sounds.

“Can you sleep?” asked the children.

There was a long silence.

I could hear the children moving again.

“Is Saint Nicholas asleep?” asked the children.

“No,” mamma said. “Be quiet.”

“What the hell would he be asleep tonight for?” I asked.

“He might be,” the children said.

“He isn’t,” I said.

“Let’s try to sleep,” said mamma.

The house became quiet once more.

I could hear the rustling noises {o the children made (when they moved in their beds)}.

Out on the lawn a clatter arose.

I got out of bed and went to the window.

The moon shone on the snow.

There was a miniature sleigh in the snow, and eight tiny reindeer.

A little man was driving them.

He was lively and quick.

He whistled and shouted at the reindeer and called them by their names.

Their names were Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, and Blitzen.
トナカイたちの名前は、ダッシャー、ダンサー、プランサー、ヴィクセン、コメット、キューピッド、ドンダー、ブリッツェンであった。

He told them to dash away to the top of the porch, and then he told them to dash away to the top of the wall.

They did.

The sleigh was full of toys.

I could hear their hoofs pawing and prancing on the roof.

“Shut the window,” said mamma.

I stood still and listened.

I shut the window and walked about.

Mamma sat up in the bed and looked at me.

Mamma turned away toward the wall.

She didn’t say anything.

I went out into the room {where the chimney was}.

The little man came down the chimney and stepped into the room.

He was dressed all in fur.
彼は全身、毛皮をまとっていた。
His clothes were covered with ashes and soot from the chimney.
彼の服は、煙突の灰とすすで覆われていた。
On his back was a pack like a peddler’s pack.
背中には、行商人の荷物のような荷物があった。
There were toys in it.
その中にはおもちゃがあった。
His mouth was little, like a bow, and his beard was very white.
彼の口は小さく、蝶ネクタイのようであり、顎鬚（あごひげ）は真っ白であった。
Between his teeth was a stumpy pipe.
歯の間には太くて短いパイプがあった。
The smoke from the pipe encircled his head in a wreath.
パイプからの煙は、花の冠の形で彼の頭のところで円を描いた。
He laughed and his belly shook.
彼は笑い、お腹が揺れた。
It shook like a bowl of red jelly.
それ［＝彼のお腹］はボールいっぱいの赤いゼリーのように揺れた。
I laughed.
私は笑った。
He winked his eye, then he gave a twist to his head.
彼は片目をつむり、それから自分の頭へと捩（ねじ）れを与えた。
→彼はウィンクして、それから首を傾（かし）げた。
He didn’t say anything.
彼は何も言わなかった。

He turned to the chimney and filled the stockings and turned away from the chimney.
彼は煙突のほうへ向き、長靴下に（おもちゃを）詰め、煙突から顔を向けた。
(Laying his finger aside his nose,) he gave a nod.
（指を鼻の横に置きながら、）彼は頷（うなづ）いた。
→（鼻の横に指を当てながら、）彼は頷いた。
Then he went up the chimney.
それから彼［＝セント＝ニコラス］は煙突をのぼった。
I went to the chimney and looked up.
私は煙突のところに行き、そして（暖炉の中から煙突の上を）見上げた。
I saw him get into his sleigh.
私はセント＝ニコラスが橇（そり）に乗り込むのを目にした。
He whistled at his team and the team flew away.
彼は6頭のトナカイに向かって口笛をふき、そしてトナカイたちは飛び去った。
The team flew as lightly as thistledown.
6頭のトナカイは、薊（あざみ）の綿毛と同じくらい軽やかに飛んだ。
The driver called out, “Merry Christmas and good night.”

I went back to bed.

“What was it?” asked mamma. “Saint Nicholas?”

She smiled.

She sighed and turned in the bed.

“I saw him,” I said.

“I did see him,” I said.

She turned farther toward the wall.

“Father,” said the children.
「お父さん」と子どもたちが言った。

“There you go,” mamma said. “You and your flying reindeer.”
「ほらね、あなたの出番よ」とお母さんが言った。「あなたと空飛ぶトナカイよ」

“Go to sleep,” I said.
「寝なさい」と私は言った。

“Can we see Saint Nicholas (when he comes)?” the children asked.
「（セント＝ニコラスがやって来たら、）逢えるかな」と子どもたちが訊ねた。

“You got to be asleep,” I said. “You got to be asleep (when he comes). You can’t see him (unless you’re unconscious).”
眠っていなくちゃ駄目だよ」と私は言った。「（セント＝ニコラスがやって来たときに、）眠っていなくちゃ駄目なんだ。（意識を失っていなければ、）彼には逢えないよ」

“Father knows,” mamma said.
「お父さんにはわかっているのよ」とお母さんが言った。

I pulled the covers over my mouth.
私は口を覆うように（寝具用の）上掛けを引っぱった。
It was warm under the covers.
上掛けのところは温かかった。
(As I went to sleep) I wondered [if mamma was right].
（眠りに落ちるときに、）［お母さん（の言ったこと）は正しいのかな］と私は思った。
