World Englishes対訳

1.1
In 1780 John Adams said, "English is destined to be (in the next and succeeding centuries) more generally the language of the world than Latin was in the last age or French is in the present age."
It took close to 200 years before he was proved right.
1.2
No exact statistics exist concerning the number of people {using English in the world}.
Howeverit is said [that more than one billion people speak English].
According to some experts1.5 billion people use English in one way or another{of which 400 million use it as their native languagewhile the remaining use it as a second or foreign language}.
The figure "one billion" itself is not particularly surprising(compared with the number of speakers ofsayChinese or Spanish).
Neverthelessthe fact [thatout of 3,000 or 5,000 languages {supposedly existing on earth}English is the only language {that can be labeled "a global language"}] is worth mentioning.
At presentthe status of English in the map of world languages is quite unique.
1.00
Latin was originally spoken in the region around Rome {called Latium}.
It became the official language of the Roman Empire.
The expansion of the empire spread the use of Latinand in the 2nd century B.C.the language was spoken throughout Europethe Middle Eastand nothern Africa.
In the Middle AgesLatin was the universal language of academiaand fluency in it was a sign of being part of the sophisticated elite.
Even todaywe can see the influence of Latin in languages {that are still thrivingsuch as FrenchSpanishand Italian}.
2.1
Is English going to keep its present positionor is its global status likely to be challenged by other languages?
A thousand years agothe dominance of Latin would have seemed guaranteed for good.
But who knows [what the position of any language will be in a thousand years' time]?
Language status is closely related to 1political2military3economicand 4cultural factorsand (as these factors change,) so languages rise and fall.
Some experts do not find it difficult to imagine ArabicChineseor Spanish becoming the next world language.
Spanish is (in fact) the world's fastest growing mother tongue today.
It is unlikelyhowever[that any other language is going to replace English in its global role in our lifetimes].
And yet (even if English keeps its current position,) this does not necessarily mean [that the language will preserve its linguistic character {as it is}].
IndeedEnglish is currently changing faster than at any time since the Renaissance.
2.2
The total number of native speakers of English in the world is actually falling(when seen as a proportion of World English users).
This is taking place (because there has been a widening gap in population between first-language countries and those {where English is a second or foreign language}).
Presentlythree out of four English speakers are non-native.
(As second and foreign language speakers increase in number and gain in their international presence,) usages {which were once criticized as "foreignor "wrong," such as "three person," "many informations," and "he be running"might someday 1become part of standard speechand (in time) possibly 2appear even in standard writing.
3.1
What happens (when a large number of people adopt English in their community)?
They develop "an English" of their own.
In factthere are now many varieties of spoken English {developing around the worldin countries such as IndiaSingaporeand Ghana}.
They have been called "New Englishes."
Some use the expression "World Englishes" to refer to varieties of English {spoken in different places}.
With the concept of "World Englishes" {growing more common,} [the distinction between English as a first language and English as a second or foreign language] is becoming less significant.
3.2
It is important S'to note here [that the proper noun "English" has received a plural "-s"――becoming "Englishes."]
The term "World Englishes" functions as a collective noun such as animals and vegetables.
World Englishes(世界の諸英語)という用語は、たとえばanimals(動物)やvegetables(野菜)のように、集合名詞として機能する。
The category of World Englishes includes Japanese EnglishAmerican EnglishSpanish Englishand Korean English as its members.
World Englishes
The basic point about World Englishes is C1[that English no longer V1belongs exclusively to native speakers but V2is a global resource {shared by all peoples of the world,}] and C2[that English norm are not to be decided locally but globally].
This means [that all these users of English have their share in the future of English].
So todaySto have learned English Vmeans Cto have your own rights as one of the users of the language.
And it is just as likely [that the future course of English will be influenced 1by second or foreign language speakers of English] as 2by native speakers.
3.3
Language learners will be facing these World Englishesand they will develop a sense of international standards of Englishas well as their national norms of English{which are currently the focus of learning}.
It may not be many yearshowever(before an international standard becomes the starting-point for every learner of Englishwith 1British2Americanand 3other varieties {all seen as optional versions of English}).
3.00
What are World Englishes?
World Englishes
The term "World Englishes" is used to express the English {spoken by people throughout the world}.
「World Englishes」
Their Englishes has become different from Standard English because of cultural influences.
For examplepeople in India often add "kind" to phrases like 1"your kind information," 2"your kind encouragement" and so on.
(When they ask your name,) they will say, "May have your good nameplease?"
May have your good nameplease?"
Perhapstheir English reflects the Indian value of respecting good manners.
4.1
The English language so far has spread out globally across national boundaries.
ConsequentlyEnglish has diversified to become "Englishes."
Some worry [that more diversity will lead to less intelligibility].
But S[whether you feel positive or negative about this change in the status of English] depends on [how you define the language].
(If you think of English only as a national language {belonging to a certain nation-state such as the United StatesBritainor Canada,}) then perhaps you will feel conservative about too many changes in English.
On the other hand(if you see English as a global language {shared by people around the world,}) then you will feel more 1positive and 2interested rather than 3worried about the future status of the language.
4.2
We have good reason to feel positive about this matter(for language is basically a system of compromise{in which endless negotiations of meaning take place for mutual understanding}).
This applies not only in face-to-face situationsbut also in other forms of communication like the Internet.
In this age of information technology and economic globalizationpeople are required(whenever they are,) to use their own English to make themselves understood.
Thusit has to be admitted [that Englishes are actually being used as a system of compromise{which need not be taken negatively}].
Thus, we have to admit [that we are actually using Englishes as a system of compromise{which we need not take | negatively}].
And along with this new systemcompletely new set of standards could be created(making communication beyond national boundaries more meaningful).
And along with this new systemwe could create completely new set of standards(making communication beyond national boundaries more meaningful).
We should increase our awareness of "World Englishes," (because we are and will be users of English as a global language).
